Exchange End of Life Cycle: Migration Strategies

Yup, only 343 more days. No, not until your next 2-week long holiday break. No not until you break your 2020 New Year’s resolution. You only have 343 more days to keep running your Exchange 2010 environment with extended support!

Out with the old, in with the new. Microsoft’s recent release of the suite of 2019 server products, like SharePoint, Exchange, and Skype mean that the old wave of technology gets end-of-life. So, if your organization is running its Messaging workloads on Exchange 2003, 2007 or 2010, the time to plan for your future state is now.

The following table will give you some insight into the Life Cycle History of Exchange Server as it stands today. If you’re on Exchange 2013 or newer, your Exchange Organization is supported at least until 2023.

OH NO! What do I do????

Don’t fret! After January 14, 2020, Exchange 2010 will continue to function normally. Users and the business will continue as usual, but there won’t be any support from Microsoft. Which means if you run into any patching issues, or any technical errors and bugs, then you’re on your own to come up with a resolution.

While it isn’t the end of the world, certainly not a place you want to be. Nor do you want your CEO’s e-mail going down and have no way of recovering it because you are in an unsupported environment. BAD.

So, what are the options?

Well, upgrade or migrate of course.

Option 1: Migrate to Microsoft 365 (Office 365)

Microsoft 365 is the latest and greatest Exchange Online messaging platform. It’s a full suite of service offerings bundled together to provide you with the essentials in making the transition. You can choose one of three different migration paths to take:

  • Cutover (Express) migration
  • Staged migration
  • Hybrid migration

Option 2: Migrate to Exchange 2016 (on-prem)

If your Organization or Business is not ready for the public cloud and Microsoft 365. Create a migration strategy into Exchange 2016 on-prem. You can look at skipping Exchange 2013 altogether and build out an updated Exchange infrastructure to be hosted on-prem or within your datacenter.

Option 3: Migrate to Exchange 2016 (Azure)

Are you looking to reduce your datacenter or on-prem footprint and the organization is not ready for Microsoft 365 in the public cloud? Hybridize your existing Exchange infrastructure and build out IaaS based workloads in Azure and in the process, you can reduce your overhead costs by leveraging Azure.

Now, you have options and you’re not alone! Start work on creating a migration strategy and execute the migration strategy. Microsoft is offering a great ROI Calculator for those that need a little more convincing.

It is just the right time to get your organization off that aging and unsupported platform and migrate your Messaging & Collaboration workloads into Microsoft 365 or a newer supported platform of Exchange or Azure before they become a burden for your business.
